Hi, I am Sumedh, I am from India and studying in Nanjing from last 4 years. after staying in Nanjing for so long time I have got lots of funny incidence to tell but I will tell some of them.
- Nu/Nv (女)
well if you are staying in china then you are quite familier with this character (seen at toilets ) this means girl.
This was our first funny incidence in Nanjing. It was our first year and our first chinese class
our chinese teacher was teaching us the pronounciations of chinese characters
(without telling the meanings) and he gave more stress on this character because
its pronounciation is a bit strange, but for us it was fun,we laughed alot.
After the class on the way back to our dormitory we were laughing and loudly imitating how the teacher was pronouncing this word.we were unaware of the meaning of this word, all the girls on the road were looking at us.we didnt knew why they are looking….. until next class when teacher told us the meaning of this word……
after it we never tried to pronounce any chinese word until we know its meaning…
Another thing to tell is you must have heard about CHINGLISH but some of my friends have invented ENGNESE….
yes its their way of speaking chinese,
one of my friend calls ice-cream as - 牛奶工作(niu nai gong zuo) because his logic is that ice-cream is made by doing work on milk.
China daily (news-paper) - 中国每天 his logic is 中国 means china and 每天 means daily
actually China daily is called as 中国日报.
These are some of everyday life experiences, which makes us laugh and makes us happy everyday. When I go back home in the holidays everybody asks me which city of China I study in (although they only know Shanghai and Beijing)
Instead of telling them directly I say like this - Bei means north and jing means capital ,Nan means south and jing means capital. You know Beijing was like north capital of China and Nanjing was like south capital of China.
This simple explaination makes people remember name of Nanjing and makes me proud to tell them that I live in Nanjing
Love you Nanjing
