They have a strange system where they send the card info through a third party via UnionPay (银联). It seemed kind of shady at the time. It took forever and the clerk had to make a phone call to verify to them that I had ID. There was a lot of discussion, and they did not seem to have much experience with MasterCard, even though it is a big department store. It did not seem very secure. Then I returned to the US for a business trip and my credit card was declined. I called my bank and they listed off my recent transactions, which included two internet purchases the day after my Xinbai purchase totaling more than $500 which I did not make. Apparently someone involved in the transaction, either at the department store or in the network they send the data through, ripped off my number and sold it. Luckily, I will not have to pay for the fraudulent purchases, but if the purchases had not been noticed or if I had been using a debit card, I might be out 500 bucks.</p> <p>I use my credit cards occasionally in China and have not had any problems until now, but there is clearly something shady at Xinbai.
